Federico Gutiérrez-Solana

Research professor. Group Director

Federico is an Engineer of Roads, Canals and Ports from the Polytechnic University of Madrid, taking a doctorate with an Extraordinary Prize. Professor of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering and co-founder of LADICIM.

Fulbright Scholar and Associate Researcher at Carnegie-Mellon University (Pittsburgh) is a professor at the University of Cantabria (Holder since 1984 and Professor since 1989). Visiting professor at the universities of Carnegie-Mellon, Tufts (Boston) and Paris-XI (Orsay).

He has the medal of honor of the Spanish Fracture Group and the medal of professional merit and the medal of honor, both, of the College of Engineers of Roads, Canals and Ports. Also the Grand Cross of the Ministry of Defense.

At the University of Cantabria he has been Director of the ETS of Engineers of Roads, Canals and Ports (1987-1995), Vice-Rector for Teachers and Vice-Rector for Planning and Development (1997-2001).

Rector of the University of Cantabria from March 2002 to March 2012 and President of the CRUE (Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities) from 2009 to 2011.

LINES OF INVESTIGATION

He has directed 14 doctoral theses, numerous European and national research programs, contracts with international and national organizations and companies in the field of Structural Integrity and the modeling of the mechanical behavior of materials and components. He is the author of more than 180 articles in specialized magazines and numerous monographs. He has lectured at various American and European universities. Awarded with his team at the European Fracture Conference and with the prize of the Social Council of the University of Cantabria and the University-Company Foundation Network Award.
