Abstract

This paper shows the design and validation of a device for the performance of mechanical tests on specimens disposed in horizontal position when the available machines apply vertical loads. The device detailed in this paper solves the specific problem of performing tensile and fracture toughness tests in a galvanizing bath with liquid at 450 °C. This paper begins with the formulation of the problem and the specific needed equipment. Secondly, the proper solution and its design are explained, including strength distribution and dimensional calculation. After that, room temperature tensile test results are described. Those results are compared with the known characteristics of the tested steels. Finally, in the conclusions some indications about changes or possible improvements of the device are detailed.
