Emeritus Professor of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering

Federico Gutiérrez-Solana

Federico Gutiérrez-Solana Salcedo holds a degree in Civil Engineering (Ingeniero de Caminos, Canales y Puertos) from the Polytechnic University of Madrid (1975), where he earned his PhD in 1981, receiving the Extraordinary Doctorate Award. A Fulbright Scholar, he has served as a visiting professor at Carnegie Mellon University, Tufts University, and Paris XI. Since 1983, he has been affiliated with the University of Cantabria, where he was Full Professor of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering from 1989.

He has held various academic leadership positions, including Director of the School of Civil Engineering (1987–1995), Vice-Rector for Faculty and for Planning and Development (1997–2001), and Rector of the University of Cantabria (2002–2012). Additionally, he served as President of the Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities (CRUE) from 2009 to 2011.

Co-founder of LADICIM, he has supervised 14 doctoral theses and numerous national and international research projects in the field of structural integrity and the modeling of the mechanical behavior of materials and components. He is the author of more than 180 articles in specialized journals and several monographs. He has delivered lectures at various universities across Europe and the Americas.

He has been honored with the Medal of Honor from the Spanish Fracture Group, the Medal for Professional Merit, and the Medal of Honor from the College of Civil Engineers (Ingenieros de Caminos, Canales y Puertos), as well as the Grand Cross awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Defense.
